JENNY AND THE CAT CLUB
Written and illustrated by Esther Averill
New York Review Children’s Collection
Here’s an old favorite with a new-ish twist; Jenny Linsky, a precocious but friendly black cat in New York, has many adventures with her Cat Club friends and the warm respite of a home with Captain Tinker. The artwork is simple yet entertaining; the cats are endowed with a variety of surprised expressions and my favorite portion of the book describes a fire accidentally set by the Den of Dogs who play with matches(naughty). Pickles, the fire-fighting cat, says to Jenny, “It takes courage for a little cat to wait patiently and unselfishly at home when her best red scarf is in a fire.” Jenny’s scarf is of course rescued and she is blessed with many dear cat friends, which, if you think about it, is the solace in which hopefully many of us can take during these bad times.

Thanks for recommending Jenny and the Cat Club to your readers. I’d like to make one correction, however. New York Review Books is the publisher of Jenny and the Cat Club. Here is a link to Esther Averill’s page at the NYRB site (where you can also find out more about other books in the Jenny Series):
