LOUISE, THE ADVENTURES OF A CHICKEN
Kate DiCamillo and Harry Bliss
HarperCollins Children’s Books
“Hope is the thing with feathers…” was said (I guess) by Emily Dickinson, and we can all take away a big lesson in hope, taught by our heroine, Louise. Louise faces down horrible things like pirates and circus freaks with wide but understanding eyes and the desire for true adventure. Those of us who are fearful can take great inspiration from Louise as well as solace in the refrain that is repeated at the finish of each of her stories: “She tucked her beak beneath her wing. She closed her eyes; and there, safe in the warm henhouse, Louise slept the deep and dreamless sleep of the true adventurer.” Each night I pray for dreamless sleep and each night that does not happen but I’ll continue to carve out my own adventures and hope to live them with the grace and agility of my new chicken friend. Cheers to this magical writer/illustrator duo from whom I pray we’ll see many more books.
