In Sea Changes, novelist Gail Graham has created one of her most compelling characters yet- a woman who is torn between a man who is no longer alive and an undersea world that offers her peace and comfort. The torment of grief is something Graham knows well, having lost not only her husband, but also her son. Graham uses the death of Sarah’s husband to examine the world of widowhood, from coping with loss to how society views women who are widows, and conveys how hope and grief can blend to create an unnamed emotion.
Sarah Andrews feels lost and abandoned.. Her daughter wants her to “move on,” her psychiatrist wants her to “heal her wounds,” and everybody else wants her to get over the fact that her husband has died. She decides that perhaps it would be best to end her life, so she heads to the beach with all intentions of never coming back.
But the sea has other plans for her.
Warm, touching, and insightful, Sea Changes is an avenue of hope and inspiration for women who are suffering loss. Sarah Andrews will become their heroine, created lovingly by a woman who’s been there.
